Christmas will soon be here! (I am not prepared at all LOL!) and if you are looking for a present for the foodie in your life, how about getting them a Tefal Optigrill? I have been testing one in Jo’s Kitchen over the last couple of months and have been quite impressed! I have had health grills in the past but I have never really liked them that much as they were always hard to clean. The Tefal Optigrill is completely different though! It has two large non – stick grill plates which are removable and are most importantly dishwasher safe. The drip tray, where all the excess fat/meat juices collects during cooking is removable and dishwasher safe too.
The Optigrill is quite large but it is very study and I get the feeling that if looked after well, it could be in your kitchen for years to come. The Tefal Optigrill cooks your food using a sensor which can judge the thickness of the food and tell you when it cooked to rare, medium and well done. All you need to do is choose which programme that you want (burger, poultry, sausage, bacon, steak, and fish) and then press OK. The Tefal Optigrill then heats up and then beeps when it is ready for you to put your food in. As it cooks the light then changes to show you what stage of cooking your food is at from blue, green, yellow, orange and red. Yellow is rare and red is well done, although it does change for some food. The instructions give more detail about this. If your food is frozen, then you just press the frozen button before selecting the programme that you want. The M (manual setting) keeps the grill at a constant temperature and lets you cook toasted sandwiches, paninis and so on.
To test out the Optigrill, I made Jamie Oliver’s Gammon and Eggs (with Nan Betty) In the recipe, Jamie fries the mustard powder coated gammon in a frying pan but I wanted to see how the Tefal Optigrill would handle it. I cooked the gammon on the bacon setting until the sensor showed it to be cooked to medium, which the instructions say is best for gammon. The gammon was cooked perfectly however where the grill plates had not touched the gammon, the mustard powder was uncooked and the result was slightly disappointing. I think normal gammon on the Tefal Optigrill would be fine but I do not think I would make this on it again. I served the gammon with garlic and rosemary mini roast potatoes which I cooked in my Tefal Actifry for 20 minutes until they were crisp and golden, and a fried egg.
- 1 tablespoon mild British rapeseed oil (I useFarrington's Mellow Yellow)
- 500g baby potatoes
- ½ teaspoon garlic purée
- 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
- In the Actifry, put in the oil, baby potatoes, garlic purée and dried rosemary
- Turn the Actifry on and set the timer for 20 minutes (Express XL model) and 25-30 minutes for models which are not express versions
- Once cooked, serve with gammon or steak. Eat and enjoy!
You can currently buy a Tefal Optigrill from Amazon for £89.99 which is an amazing 40% off!
